Enrollment Growth Continues, Bolstered by Short-Term Credentials
Summary: The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center's report reveals a 2 percent increase in college enrollment in fall 2025, largely driven by a 6.6 percent surge in short-term credential seekers and increased enrollments in community colleges and associate programs. Despite this overall growth, graduate enrollments remained stagnant with a slight decrease in master’s programs. The report reflects changing preferences towards short-term, skill-focused educational paths, underscored by government support through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act allowing Pell Grants for these programs, amidst a demographic shift and a decline in traditional and graduate enrollments, notably in computer science due to market saturation and AI concerns. Observations: There's a growing appetite among...
A Framework for Generative AI in Graduate Professional Development
Summary: Graduate education is increasingly adopting generative AI as a tool for professional development, helping students navigate complex career tasks such as résumé building, networking, and preparing for interviews. A proposed four-stage framework—explore, build, connect, refine—guides students in using AI effectively while maintaining authenticity and ethical standards. This approach encourages the use of AI as a supportive "thought partner" for mapping career paths, practicing communication skills, and refining projects based on feedback. However, the framework emphasizes that AI cannot replace human judgment and relationships, urging graduate programs to offer structured guidance to ensure proper and meaningful AI use. Observations: Graduate students are adopting generative AI...
A Model for Cultivating Personal Growth
AI Assisted Content Summary: Maja Djikic, a scholar at the University of Toronto, underscores the importance of a comprehensive approach to personal development, transcending the common focus on merely altering behaviors. She advocates for a holistic model that includes the mind, body, motivation, behavior, and emotion, emphasizing that transformation, though challenging, yields greater fulfillment. Djikic's work, particularly through the Rotman School’s Self-Development Laboratory and in her book "The Possible Self," highlights the pitfalls of traditional success metrics and the potential for personal growth even at advanced career stages. Her research suggests that personality is more adaptable than often believed, and societal norms frequently restrict this growth. The pandemic,...
Technology and the Skills Shortage
Citation: Colback, Lucy. “Technology and the Skills Shortage.” Financial Times, May 18, 2023. https://www.ft.com/content/b1b710a1-6d12-43e5-8508-ae4584a7289a. Extracted Content: Developed nations are facing a worker shortage. As pandemic restrictions have loosened, the demand for goods and services has rebounded but the supply of workers remains static. In the UK, the US and the EU, vacancies have increased to match or outstrip the availability of people. In Britain this is most noticeable in the public sector, especially health and transport, but the shortage afflicts private companies too. In February the British Chambers of Commerce reported the results of its 2022 survey of 5,600 firms. This showed that recruitment was harder than ever: nearly two in three firms wanted to hire people...

Do You Know Where Your Time Goes?
Do You Know Where Your Time Goes? This question surfaced during a recent radical collaboration group meeting hosted by the MBA News Digest Academy and facilitated by me. We were meeting to talk about how each program handles GME student advising and the advising challenges programs must address. During the meeting, one program manager described a process she was using to identify what she and her advising team do daily so they could justify additional staffing. Paraphrasing, she said the advising team wanted to know how they were spending their time, what activities were taking the most time, and what student needs were going unmet. Her team wanted to know where their time was going, which is something Peter Drucker said was the starting point for becoming an effective executive. In this...
Are You Ready to Take Control of Your Calendar Scheduling Experience?
Are You Ready to Take Control of Your Calendar Scheduling Experience? When I launched the MBA News Digest Academy last year, I started meeting with many people. Scheduling took time. I would receive an email asking to meet. I would reply with two or three available times, and sometimes it would take four or five emails to get a meeting scheduled. While I was looking forward to the meeting, scheduling was not something I looked forward to. I knew there had to be a better way of scheduling time on my calendar. So, I started searching for that better way. Here’s my better way. My Scheduling Solution I found an automated scheduling application called Calendly. This application helped me take ownership of my scheduling. Here are a few things I can do with Calendly: Share customized meeting...

Are You Managing Alligators or Value Chain Activities?
Are You Managing Alligators or Value Chain Activities? Graduate program leaders, team members, and faculty often find themselves up to their necks in program alligators – participating in program information sessions, meeting with students, reviewing applications, reviewing and revising website content, reviewing reports, attending faculty meetings, etc. These same program alligators are necessary, but they can cause a loss of focus and forgetting that the program swamp they are trying to drain is the education and development of graduate business students. Regaining and then maintaining the big picture focus is a challenge, but is more easily done when a well-defined program value chain is available as a reminder. What’s an Academic Unit Value Chain? Harvard Professor Michael Porter...
