Play 0.1 The Graduate Program Purpose Statement

Graduate programs often suffer from generic mission statements that fail to guide operational decision-making or distinguish them from competitors. A strong purpose statement serves as an essential, living foundation by declaring what a program believes about its learners, the standards it upholds, and how it measures success beyond graduation. Unlike broad institutional missions, an effective purpose statement is specific, directional, and honors the professional experience learners bring. It acts as a practical tool for aligning admissions, curriculum, and faculty support, ensuring every decision is traceable to the program’s defined outcomes.

  1. By examining the mission statements of several graduate business programs, it becomes clear that a program purpose statement should do more than describe the program—it should provide direction for its operations. Most mission statements outline what graduates should become or achieve, yet they rarely connect that purpose to crucial decisions involving admissions, curriculum, faculty support, assessment, and how graduate success is measured. A well-designed purpose statement can therefore become a valuable tool for program leaders, providing a concise, differentiating, and guiding framework for program decisions and future growth. I suggest that graduate program leaders review their program’s mission statement and consider how it compares with the purpose statement template I created.
